Summary and Review
Audiences and critics alike fell in love with John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when it opened in theaters on June, 11 1986. This coming of age story is still the perfect end of the school year, start of summer vacation movie and has been a fan favorite ever since it was first released.
Frequently during the movie Matthew Broderick breaks the fourth wall and talks directly into the camera and explaining the inner workings of Ferris’ mind. This only ads to the movie’s charm and makes you feel even more engaged with what’s happening on screen.
The movie follows a day in the life of cute, witty, charming, and very popular high school senior Ferris Bueller. He plays sick to skip school and his parents totally fall for his act, but his sister Jeanie doesn’t buy it for a minute. Ferris has all ready skipped several days of school and the Dean of Students is out to get him so he knows he has to make his last “skip day" totally epic.
Ferris is joined on his adventures through downtown Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane Peterson and his best friend Cameron Frye. They visit the Sears Tower, the Art Institute, the Board of Trade, a parade down Dearborn Street, a Gold Coast lunch and a game at Wrigley Field. Even if you’ve never been to Chicago, after watching this movie, you’ll feel like you have.
Throughout their field trip around Chicago, they creatively avoid Mr. Rooney who gets increasingly irate at each near miss of catching Ferris. Each character in this comedy is unique and memorable in their own way especially Ferris’ sister Jeanie who can go from sweet and sassy to full on bitch faster than Cameron father’s Ferrari. This is a fun filled roller coaster ride that teaches some life lessons along the way.
