Do Your Homework

  1. Whether you are starting your own business or finding a new job, you need to do your homework.

I heard those groans, and those of you who ask, "Didn’t I give up homework when I finished school?"

What I mean is that you must research whatever you are going to pursue.

When you are scheduled for an interview, find out what exactly that company does.

What is the outlook like for them? Are there any important things happening in the company? Who is the CEO? The managing partner? What donations have they made?

These are all the things you can talk about at your interview to show that you have researched the company.

Also you will learn whether this company upholds the same principles you do in your life.

If you are starting a business, research what it is you want to do.

Talk to people who have done what you want to do. Shadow them. This way you will see what is really involved and if you would enjoy doing it day after day.

Doing your homework when transitioning from one career to another will cause you to be able to make wise decisions.

It will also look intelligent. And who doesn’t want to hire an intelligent person?
