Iron Man 3

  1. At the time of its release, Iron Man 3 had the second biggest opening weekend ever behind another movie that includes Iron Man (The Avengers). But, should it be so successful? Sure it should because it has everything the general public wants in a movie:  superheroes, explosions, loose ties with pop culture and politics, some laughs, and Robert Downey Jr. All it’s missing is vampires. Tony Stark himself, however, is a good metaphor for this film. At his core is a machine. Same for the movie.

This film, directed by Shane Black of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), amounts to a lot of surface thrills and a lot of one liners that work together to make the film’s 130 minutes fly by. It has its problems, though. The bad guy’s motives are weak (but his acting is great), the battles almost bordered on ridiculous at times (if you’ve seen it, you know the one I’m talking about), and the best action scene (which involves a plane and is referenced in one of the trailers for the film) is completely implausible even given that the rest of the film is quite sci-fi heavy. It’s still a fun film, though.

All in all, this is a film that does exactly what it’s supposed to do and nothing more. That’s a success in my book… and in the wallets of Marvel’s big wigs.
