  1. There are five top diseases that are directly linked to obesity. Obesity in our country is at epidemic proportions. More than half of Americans 20 years and older are either obese or overweight. Scientists and nutritionists agree that if obese and overweight people do not lose weight and get into shape, serious illnesses will occur.

Number One: Obesity is Linked to High Blood Pressure

One top disease that is linked to obesity is high blood pressure. It has been found that one-third of those who have high blood pressure are also obese, compared to those who have a healthy and lower weight. High blood pressure can lead to heart attacks and strokes but can be prevented with a better diet and exercise program.

Number Two: Another disease that is linked to obesity is cancer. Studies have shown that when women and men are overweight, there is an increase in cancer. Research has also shown that thousands of cases of cancer could be prevented in the US if Americans would lose weight and get rid of their excess body fat.

Number Three: In addition, another disease that is linked to obesity is gallstones. When a person is obese, the liver begins to excrete large amounts of bile–bile that is stored in the gallbladder. Bile is important when fats need to be digested; however but too much bile causes gallstones. This is another disease that could be prevented by losing weight.

Number Four: Believe it or not: Obesity Causes Back pain

Weighing too much–especially having too much body weight in the abdomen, puts a great deal of strain on the spine. It is a fact that lower back pain is quite common with women who are overweight or obese. It has been found that losing only a few pounds can make a difference for those who suffer with back pain. Losing 5, 10 or more pounds can help reduce back pain and if done in a sensible and consistent manner, can greatly improve this medical condition.

Number Five: In addition, obesity also causes joint problems. Too much weight on your joints can sometimes bring on inflammation in the joints. This is also known as having arthritis. Osteoarthritis can be quite painful and debilitating and often affects a person’s ankles, spine, hips and knees. Many have found relief with this condition from certain exercises like walking, physical therapy exercises, cool water therapy and being careful when lifting.

To conclude, obesity causes many health concerns; however, the best and most effective way to treat obesity is to lose weight, get more consistent and regular exercise and change your eating habits. By eating more fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grain foods and eliminating the fattening foods such as cookies, cakes, doughnuts, pies, white bread and other processed foods, you can lose the weight and avoid many serious diseases.
