  1. Women’s ski clothes serve a very specific function. They usually have a waterproof coating as a barrier between the wearer and falling or spraying snow, and they have a thick inner lining usually made from polyester fibers to insulate the wearer from the cold. While stores offer these jackets primarily for skiers and snowboarders, they can come in handy whenever the wearer needs to go outside during the winter.

If you’re looking to buy a high-quality ski jacket, your best option is to visit a sporting goods store. Sports Authority, REI, and Patagonia are a few examples of nationwide chains that cater to outdoors lovers. These stores’ staff will be able to help you find the exact jacket that fits your needs if you are looking to get gear for skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing.

Many winter sports enthusiasts place fit, warmth, and number of pockets over style in choosing cold weather apparel. A winter jacket that is too small limits a skier’s or boarder’s movement. A jacket that is too large creates unwanted drag and could get caught on trees and chairlifts.

A discerning buyer also takes a close look at the thickness of the jacket’s lining. Some jackets are only shells, offering nothing more than a waterproof outer layer. If you purchase a shell, you will want to put on layers of thick clothing beneath it when you wear it. A large number of skiers and snowboarders purchase a parka, which has a thick insulating layer already included.

The higher the number of pockets, the more many outdoor enthusiasts favor a jacket. You do not want to carry a purse when walking through snow. A coat with a decent number of pockets will allow you to keep your wallet, phone, and everything else you might need on your person throughout the day. This is also advantageous if you are planning to wear your jacket in the city. Purse and backpack straps sometimes dig uncomfortably into shoulders.

Snowsporters usually make sure these tenets of comfort are taken into account when they purchase a jacket. If they find several options that meet their needs, however, their final choice rests on price and style. The suitable jacket with the lowest price gets to go in the shopping cart.

If your options meet all your criteria for comfort and price, though, it is time to start thinking about style. Most parkas come in a non-tailored shape that will leave you looking like an androgynous marshmallow when you put it on. This means your decision will usually boil down to color preferences. Many coats come in a solid color or have one bright color for the torso and arms and gray or black on the shoulders. Others have patterns such as pinstripes, houndstooth, plaid, or even floral.

Most of the patterned jackets come from companies that are largely associated with snowboarding, such as Burton and Bonfire. Although the form and function of the jacket is essentially the same, a few skiers refuse to associate with anything snowboard-related. They stick to skier-friendly companies such as Obermeyer, Spyder, North Face, and Patagonia.

No matter what brand you buy, the ski jacket should fit and keep you warm. A good ski jacket will protect you from the elements on the slopes as well as in the city, keeping you safe from wind and snow even if you are in the midst of a blizzard.
