  1. While all you really need in the way of homeschool curriculum is a good library, you may still want to know how to choose homeschool curriculum.  It can seem a bit daunting to choose homeschool curriculum, especially if you are new to homeschooling.  Part of the “problem” is that the curriculum market is surprisingly large

Oftentimes veteran homeschoolers will share their homeschool curriculum choices with new homeschooling parents.  Unfortunately, this only adds to their confusion.  Instead, new homeschooling parents should go slowly.  Take time to study the different types of homeschool curriculum that are available, consider their child’s learning style and be flexible.

Even if you have just pulled your child out of public school to homeschool him, it is still important to go slow.  You don’t want to choose homeschool curriculum simply because it is the first thing that you have seen or because it reminds you of your school days.  Homeschool curriculum is expensive and there are hundreds of types and styles.  Instead, take some time to use library books or borrow materials from friends until you are able to choose homeschool curriculum yourself.

The best way in which to review the various curriculum packages that are on the market today is to attend a homeschool curriculum conference.  These take place in every one of the 50 states.  Curriculum representatives gather together at these conferences to present their books and products to homeschoolers.  This gives you the opportunity to browse through these items at your leisure so that you can decide what is the best option for your child.  It also allows you to get your questions answered and attend a variety of seminars.  You may even decide that you want to use several different homeschool curriculums: one for math, one for English, etc.

Regardless of what homeschool curriculum you decide to use, it is important to consider your child’s learning style.  These consist of:

    • Visual learners: Someone who learns by seeing
    • Kinesthetic learners: Someone who learns by moving
    • Auditory learners: Someone who learns by listening to lectures and discussing things

You will find that there are homeschool curriculums that are more appropriate for each learning style.

Whenever you choose a homeschool curriculum, you really need to be flexible.  Don’t waste your money on a lot of shiny new books only to find out halfway through the school year that your children hate these books.  If this happens to you, it is important to feel free to make a change.  Of course, this means that you will need to start this process all over again but in the end it will be worth it when you can find the right homeschool curriculum for your children.
