  1. Most people are not aware of the difference between a preemie and a newborn.  If you are one of those people, this article will define the difference and explain to you the definition of a preemie and a newborn.  Though preemies and newborns are babies just born, there is a difference.

    1. What is a Preemie and What is the Difference Between a Preemie and a Newborn?  A preemie, which is a shortened term for premature baby, is a baby born prior to the 37th week of gestation.  Preemies have a more challenging start at life than newborns due the fact that because of their early arrival, their organs have not had an opportunity to fully develop enough to function on their own.  How prematurely the infant was born also plays a major role on the survival rate of the infant.  Some preemies, who weigh between 1 ¾ pounds to 3 pounds, are considered micro-preemies and are usually born before the 26th week of gestation.  Unfortunately micro-preemies have a lesser chance of survival than those preemies born after the 26th week of gestation.  Though all preemies require special medical attention and care, micro-preemies require even more.  Preemies that are born above 3 pounds can also have many medical ailments but it is believed that they have a better chance of survival and are considered to be able to function slightly more independently, though this is not always the case.  All preemies require special medical attention and lots of it, to assist them on their journey to functioning independently and living normal infant lives.  Most often when parents see their preemies in the hospital it can be a frightening experience because of all of the medical equipments, tubes and other life sustaining equipment needed to help preemies fight for survival.  Though all infants, newborn and preemies require love and attention, preemies need extra attention because of their fragile state.  A newborn, an infant born at or after the 37th week of gestation is believed to have fully developed organs and are able to function mostly on their own.  Most infants classified under the word “newborn” are normally healthy, fully developed infants who are not at risk of major health issues that commonly affect preemies.  The difference between preemies and newborns and the time frame in which they are born.

    2. Special Clothing for Preemies.  Newborn clothes and preemie clothes are quite similar and quite different on the same note.  Because preemies are considered "newborns", people often think that "newborn" clothes will fit a preemie infant.  The truth of the matter is that, preemies are smaller than the average newborn therefore their clothing sizes differ.  Newborn clothes are cute, petitie and come in a variety of colors and styles.  Preemie clothing are equally as cute, petite and also come in a variety of colors and styles.  Preemie diapers are much smaller than diapers for newborns.  Though they are pretty much made the same, preemier diapers have been known to help reduce irritation, made with breathable material, and more security around the waistband to prevent leakage.  This is because the size of a preemie is smaller so special emphasis is placed on diaper stability.  Preemies require special clothing for a number of reasons.  Because of their smaller sizes, they are not able to wear standard newborn or infant clothing.  Also, because their organs are not fully developed, their bodies may not function adequately enough to maintain proper body heat, or warmth.  For this reason, some preemie clothing may be made with thicker or heavier material to help the preemie stay warm.  Also because some preemies are sent home with special equipment, they require clothing with special openings to accommodate tubes and other components of medical devices.
