  1.    What is acne and its causes?

Acne is an ongoing battle with many people. It starts out when some people are young and can last into adulthood, or it can go away as age increases. Acne can also be non-existent in the teenage years and appear later in adulthood which is known as adult acne. Either way, it can take an emotional toll. It can lead to depression and avoidance with other people and activities. It is treatable and there are ways to contain the breakouts. The scientific name is acne vulgaris, and is white simply an inflammation of the skin. It is not just on the face however, it can happen anywhere on the body. When our pores secrete an overabundance of oil and this mixes with our shedding skin cells, it gets clogged in the hair follicles and that is what produces a pimple or a blackhead. Some people are more prone to acne by genetics, and some have a condition where the dead skin cells do not shed properly and they produce a higher chance in causing a pimple.

       Sulfar soap

Sulfar soap has been used for thousands of years and has many helpful qualities such as being an antiseptic, anti fungal, and acne helper. It starts by ridding the skin of its already dead and dry cells which is why it is best to not get carried away and go overboard. It can be very drying for your skin, and like most products, it is best to work up a tolerance or up to the twice a day cleansing ritual. Some of the soaps contain salicylic acid which is an extra booster towards ridding the body of the breakouts. Many have heard of the power of the Proactive system produced by Dr. Fields. They actually have a sulfar mask that is available and it helps with drying up pimples and comedones that have appeared. After clearing, then using weekly is one of the steps in fighting the battle. There are other places that offer the original bar of soap, and this can be just as affective.

      Drug store or Doctor?

Many people decide to fight the acne breakout with over the counter acne medications found at the drugstores. For some people this works and can help contain it. For other people it does nothing and the constant scrubbing can actually irritate the breakouts and make them worse. When the local drugstore is not helping, then seeing a dermatologist will help lead you in the right direction. They have prescription acne medication that is made just for those type’s of people who need that extra bit of help. They will ask you questions and see maybe if there is a cause in your lifestyle to the acne such as stress, genetics, and what your hormones are going through at that point in time.

Contributing Factors: Puberty, Stress, and Hormones

Stress is a big factor in breakouts. A study done by the Stanford University School of Medicine found stress can further worsen acne by the production of an overabundance in hormone levels which in turn slow healing. Females who are close in time to their monthly period may experience heavier or more noticeable breakouts because of the stress levels, hormones, and the body going through a difficult time. During puberty is when teenagers commonly experience acne because of the big change in the body mostly resulting form the massive change in hormonal levels and stress factors in their new bodies.

       Skin Types

There are many different skin types such as normal, oily, and combination. Combination is most commonly referred to as the T-zone where the forehead and bridge of the nose are the most oily places, and the cheeks are dry or normal. For every different skin type, there are many different products to choose from. If you do go to the drugstore, just scan the shelves of acne medication and soaps and you will find at least one product for your skin type. Dry skin can seem like a solution to acne sufferers, when it is just the opposite. Oil and dead skin cells are what clogs the pores and causes the breakouts. It is best to keep your skin clean but not overdry, and get a moisturizer for your skin type.
