The Seguin Island Lighthouse sits among Maine’s rocky coastline, alone on Seguin Island located in Georgetown, Maine and was built first in 1797 and then again rebuilt in 1820 and 1857.

Once President George Washington gave the order, the lighthouse construction began and the project was completed in 1797 at a cost of $6,300. Sequin Island Lighthouse holds the high title of being the highest elevated lighthouse in Maine, it stands over 180 feet above sea level.

The fixed, non-flashing light is visible to ships as far out as 40 miles out. Due to the high occurrence of fog in this area, the light house is equipped with one of the most powerful fog horns ever made. The original structure was replaced in 1820, and again in 1857 when the present structure was erected. The light was continued to be manually monitored until it

Sequin Lighthouse is one of the coastal lighthouse stations that have reports of paranormal activity. An unsettled spirit still roams the island and has made visits, and has been seen and heard many times various keepers of the Lighthouse.

One story, most popular is that of a light keepers bride that played the piano. It was in the mid-1800’s, a new light keeper and his bride came to the island to start their new life as keepers of the Seguin. The keeper stayed busy around the island tending to the chores he was responsible for, but soon after their arrival the young bride did not adjust as well. To help with the boredom, the keeper went ashore for something he thought would help cheer his bride and make her happy again. He returned with a piano and one piece of sheet music. At first it was lovely, the keeper loved hearing his bride happy and playing the music daily and over and over again, until it slowly started driving the lighthouse keeper as crazy as his bride had already become. Finally, after asking his bride to stop playing the music and as she refused, he could take no more he finally too his ax and destroyed the piano as well as his new bride; he then took his own life. For many years, that one tune is heard being played on a piano from the island.

Other keepers on the island have reported seeing a little girl standing and waving to them as they busy themselves with work. She is seen running up and down the stairs, and some have heard her laughter. It seems that history states a girl had died on the island and her parents buried her near the generator house.

There are several more reports of different hauntings on the island such as doors opening and closing by themselves, mysterious cold spots, coats being thrown onto the floor, tools disappearing and reappearing at random, and coughing from an unseen source.
