As a 3d max expert I suggest you these books:

1- 3ds Max Speed Modeling for 3D Artists

2-Introducing 3ds Max 9 for Beginners 

3-3D Total’s Introduction to Rigging 3ds Max

4-AUTODESK 3DS MAX 9 OFFICIAL TRAINING COURSE

I think these are actually good books for starters and beginners.
