The short answer is that while it contributes, it does not cause diabetes. It takes a combination of a lot of factors to cause diabetes.

 

Your genetics are one thing that help determine your risk for Type 2 diabetes. If someone in your immediate family (i.e. parents, grandparents) has T2 diabetes, you are at a higher risk of developing it. A poor diet that is made up of too many simple carbohydrates (like white rice), high fats and high cholesterol can all contribute to your risk of diabetes as well. Add to that poor diet a lack of exercise, and you add an even higher risk.

 

If you enjoy white rice, the key to adding it to your diet safely is to maintain careful portion control. Consume white rice in moderation (once or twice a week) and pair it with fresh vegetables and fruits and lean proteins. Make most of your carbohydrates whole grains and high fiber. Along with the diet changes, get regular exercise and you can enjoy the foods you like without excessive concern.

According to the report from AFP, Health researchers said on Thursday they had found a troubling link between higher consumption of rice and Type 2 diabetes, a disease that in some countries is becoming an epidemic.

Further work is need to probe the apparent association and diets that are notoriously high in sugar and fats should remain on the no-go list, they cautioned.

"What we’ve found is white rice is likely to increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, especially at high consumption levels such as in Asian populations," Qi Sun of the Harvard School of Public Health told AFP.
