It is easy to know whether your a/c is not working by checking at the pulley in front of the a/c compressor. If the pulley spins the same speed as the the belt then compressor clutch is working, if the pulley is not spinning at all when a/c is on then something is wrong. However, it is not always the compressor. For the compressor to kick on a few pre-existing things have to happen to satisfy the the required conditions. For examples the high and low pressure switch, the compressor clutch has to be ok, the relay that send power to the compressor

Hello Frank, Here is the list to check whether your air conditioner is good or bad.

  1. Use the multimeter to check the power and resistance to the unit. If the main power is off, and still there is a power to the unit then compressor is malfunctioning and is bad.
  2. Check the capacitor. You can use multimeter to check it. Also some digital meter are present to check it. During checking the power supply should be off. The reading you get should be less than 6%. If it is more than 6%, then capacitor should be replaced.
  3. Air conditioner compressor may be bad due to compressor inlet. This can happen when a failure allows liquid refrigerant instead of vapor.

To check compressor one must seek a professional technician and if required to replaced then, replaced with standard according to your AC.
