I understand that you want to change your surname back to your maiden name, correct? If so, the reason why you want that might decide the best way to proceed.

In the USA, when eligible immigrants apply for US Citizenship, they have a chance of changing their legal name or surname (which will consequently be the new legal name and/or surname on the US Passport).

If you divorced and decide to go back to your maiden name, you need to file a Name Change Decree after you have your Divorce Decree.
