How does a gamma camera detect Technetium-99m and Iodine-123 and how are they taken into the body?
Technetium-99m and Iodine-123 are both gamma ray emitters with relatively short half-lives. When the isotopes decay they emit gamma radiation that is then picked up and processed by the gamma camera. Iodine-123 is often taken in a pill form or injected in the form of sodium iodine. Technetium-99m is usually injected into the part of the body that is being imaged.
