How does dorsomedial striatum relate to alcoholism?
Alcoholism is recognized as a disease. Researchers have discovered brain cells responsible for alcoholism. Findings prove that alcohol alters the neuronal morphology in the dorsomedial striatum, the part of the brain responsible for goal directed behaviors. Alcohol stimulates neuron D1 or D2, making them way more easily excited and with even less stimulation. This makes a person want more alcohol and is responsible for cravings.
