How long has epilepsy been around?

Francis Banan

Epilepsy has been around for a long time. This disease has been present since 2000 BCE. During that time a person with epilepsy is diagnosed as being under the influence of a Moon god and would undergo exorcism.

The oldest medical record of the Epilepsy was from a Babylonian cuneiform around 1067 – 1046 BCE. The record gave signs and symptoms, treatment and possible outcomes, and described many features of the different seizure types.

Since the Babylonians had no biomedical understanding of the disease, they attributed the seizures to possession by evil spirits and patients would be treated through spiritual means. Ancient Greeks also thought of the disease as a possession but associated it with the genius and the divine. One of the names they gave it is the sacred disease. Throughout the rest of history, Evil spirits have been blamed for the disease until at least the 17th century.
