Millions of people file their own bankruptcy every year and receive discharges of their debts. This process is known as “Pro Se” legal representation. You do not need to be an expert on handling your debt or budgeting, as filing a chapter 7 or chapter 13 is simply a process. You should check with the district court of where you will be filing your bankruptcy case, they will most likely have a Pro Se guide that will help you along every step of the way. Also, there are legal assistants available to answer questions for free in most districts, but you have to check the website or call to find out the date/time free legal assistance is available. Legal assistants will not advise you on your case, but they will help you interpret and apply certain rules to your case. Most district court websites provide all of the rules and documentation that needs to be filed. If  you are confident in your ability in gathering and completing lots of paperwork, following and applying strict rules to your case, and researching anything that you do not understand you will be able to successfully file a Pro Se bankruptcy case and receive a discharge while saving hundreds to thousands of dollars.
