The colonies already had governments and militias, and in many cases there were no British troops stationed close by so they did not have to fight to take control of their territory.

The colonists had several advantages. They were fighting for the purpose of freedom. They were familiar with the territory. The British relied on supplies and additional troops crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Americans used unconventional warfare while the British were trained in conventional firing methods.
