What causes depression?

Depression is not as simple has an unhappy response to a single event. Depression is more than often the result of a “chemical imbalance” in the brain. To put this simply, when we feel happy or good about ourselves, it is due to a mixture of chemicals being released by cells called neurons in our brain. You have have heard of some of these chemicals: serotonin and dopamine are the most commonly known but there are others. Sometimes, for a multitude of possible reasons, these chemicals removed from our brains too quickly, thus removing the happy feelings asociated with these chemicals. Drugs like Prozaic used to treat depression are called SRIs (serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and stop the “happy” chemicals from being removed from the brain.

However, people suffering from depression are unlikely to find the information I have already given useful. There are scores of reasons for why the chemical imbalance happens in the first place, often it is a combination of reasons such as illness, stressful events such as bereavement, child birth (post natal depression) or prolonged feelings of lonliness or being “shut out”. Sometimes, depression can trend in family histories.

People suffering from depression can access all kinds of help from charities and health professionals. It can all start with a visit to a GP, who can refer you from there. Treatments available are not always drug related and may simply involve counselling/ therapy sessions. In the meantime, there are lots of other things that a sufferer can do to feel better: exercise is a great way to increase the amount of mood enhancing chemicals in your brain and eating fresh, healthy foods will do the same. Simply talking about your feelings with a trusted friend or adult/ parent can also help. There are also plenty of charities supporting depression online that offer helpful advice to read. Be careful of some internet forum and chat rooms, these don’t always give the best advice. Lastly, your school or college may be able to help, look out for posters on display offering help and support.

Anxiety disorders, such as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder often accompany depression. People who are dependent on alcohol or narcotics have a significantly higher chance of also having depression. If you need any solution i want you to check out an evening of transformation wellness session from mahendra trivedi!

A smallness. Or a heaviness that presses onto the crown of your head, that drills into your “third eye”, that is the colour of bruises and as obscure and dull as English overcast months. A restriction to the chest, a kneading in the guts, a diving suit. It might have been in your childhood, it might have been your last job. Was it the memory of someone who you adored but would never love you back or even see you? It might have been a missed opportunity. A gaping hole. A repetitive reminder that you are a blundering monkey kind of human being. Depression shadows you because of an event that smashed into your life like a breeze block years ago. You’re doing so well. Everyone is jealous of you, and still it’s here. It might be nothing.

But, I promise you, joy will show it’s face in your life and you won’t recognise it, it will be bigger and shinier then you ever could have guessed.

If you can just hang on.

Depression is a disorder where the neurotransmitter imbalance occurs in brain which can only is cured through medication and therapy. Many factors and life events play role in causing it, like improper or faulty mechanism to deal with anxiety, stress,or death of loss one etc which makes us sad . Sadness occurs in life but if it doesn’t leaves and stay for a particular period it can exhibit itself as depression. Theories talk about lack of  Serotonin(a neurotransmitter ) produced responsible for the disorder. Serotonin reuptake inhibits the normal signal relay among various neuron synapses. Depression is not properly understood and considered due to Learned Helplessness (when under prolonged helpless situation one breaks down and accepts the situation as final without looking for the solution) Lithium and other mood enhancer and tranquillisers  to stabalise the mood and further Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Relaxation techniques like JPMR, Deep Breathing ,and meditation such as mindfulness proves helpful.

It is really difficult to answer these questions because there are many things which can cause depression and some of them grow from our childhood. Most unhappy children seek advice from a grief counselor when they grow up because they wanna fix the trauma they got. Fortunately, many of them are able to find the strength to fight for their life.
