What does OPI mean in nursing?

0

OPI stands for oral proficiency interview. Nurses who were not born in the US and speak English as a second language are required to undergo an OPI in some states to assure that their English skills are adequate to give safe patient care. This document from the Maryland Board of nursing gives a good explanation of what an OPI is: http://www.mbon.org/licensure/opi_faq.pdf

You are not evaluated on your knowledge of nursing practice in this interview. Each interview is unique. You may be asked to interpret or explain letters, forms and drawings. It is to determine how well you understand the English language. There are  no set topics or questions that are asked.
