What does percent by mass mean?

0

Percent by mass means (mass of substance/total mass) x 100%.  For instance if you have 100g of solution which contains 5.4 grams of HCl you can say it contains 5.4/100 x 100 = 5.4% HCl.

It is one way of way of representing concentration.

It means the mass of the component divided by the total mass of the substance.x 100%.

You can also do it for individual components in a compound.    For instance if you have a compound of NaCl  you could calculate the mass percentage of each component in NaCl  so you can do

(mass Na / mass NaCl) x 100 = (23.44/58.44)  x100 = 41%

(mass Cl / mass NaCl) x 100 = (35/58.44) x 100 = 59%

Percent by mass or mass % = (mass of the compound under consideration/mass of the compound/mixture as a whole)*100
