What is Shigella and what are its ill effects?
Shigellosis is a disease of the intestines caused by shigella bacteria. Its main symptom is diarrhea that is often bloody. It is passed through direct contact with bacteria in stool. It is also spread by contaminated food, drinking or swimming. Children aged two to four are more likely to become infected. Mild cases typically clear up untreated within a week or so. Antibiotics are usually prescribed for more serious cases. Sign can include;
- diarrhea with mucous
- abdominal cramping or pain
- fever
