http://Gobekli Tepe in south central Turkey, built 11,600 years ago provides some insight into how, this, the world’s oldest temple, may in fact have been built for religious worship and then sparked crucial urban civilization. Cleanly carved limestone pillars with bas reliefs of gazelles, snakes, foxes, scorpions and wild boars arranged in a set of rings, seven thousand years before the important megalithic site of Newgrange, Ireland, constitutes the oldest known temple with nothing comparable detected or existing in the world at that time. The pilgrims who visited Gobekli Tepe lived in a world lacking in writing, metal working or pottery and viewed this spiritual world as well outside the realm of the human mind. The Neolithic revolution, resulting in the birth of agriculture, ensured scattered groups of hunter gatherers collected at farming villages and then led to technologically sophisticated societies whose priests recorded their feats in written form. Gobelki Tepe started off the ensuing Mecca, Santiago de Compestella, Canterbury Cathedral and Gumba Mela of the River Ganges and other religious site pilgrimages. This site provides evidence that organised religion may have come before the development of agriculture. Perhaps there was no single path towards the development of civilization.

In order for a Neolithic Culture to evolve into a civilization there needs to be :

  • Job specialization with different groups performing different tasks
  • The growth of a settlement large enough to be a city
  • A centralized government for the city
