Because at this point in the game it is actually a disruptive method. If you have a captivating picture, excellent copywriting and a targeted list, you could make a serious ROI off of direct mail.  I would suggest that it works best for business that sell medium ticket items.

Direct mail works because it is relatively affordable and easy to target potential customers.  That being said the response rate for direct mail campaigns is fairly paltry at around 1/2 of 1%.  (For example 10,000 mailings, at a cost of $6000, will result in around 40-50 responses.)  If you have a relatively high profit margin, you could turn those 40-50 contacts into a reasonable profit.
