Why are roleplaying games, miniatures wargames, complicated board games, and collectable card games called “hobby games”?
A “hobby” by definition is an activity that requires both background knowledge and extensive participation. These activities are also distinguished by extensive social activity between the participants that fall outside the games themselves. Some games are momentary diversions. Hobby games are all-encompassing, immersive group activities.
