If your system experiences these failures after Microsoft SQL Server Express is installed, the problem is likely due to some issues with Microsoft Windows XP/SP2 that have been addressed in SP3. If you are not in a position to upgrade to SP3, Microsoft has created two hotfixes that can be applied to SP2 systems to fix this problem. The hotfixes may be downloaded from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921337 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943232. Both must be applied. In order to restart the system, you may need to boot the system in safe mode. After booting in safe mode, the two hotfixes can be applied. The errors described here apply to systems that exhibit this particular failure during or after the SQL Server Express installation and before the ProMax installation itself has started. In fact, the error is seen on a system where an installation of SQL Server Express is made independently of ProMax by downloading the SQL Express product from the Microsoft download site.
