The sacred book of Buddhism is called the Tipitaka. It is written in an ancient Indian language called Sanskrit and in Pali language. Buddha conducted vast number of teachings in his lifetime. After he passed away, the vast Buddhist teachings were compiled into the three different texts known as the Tripitaka (the three baskets). From Buddha’s teaching those which were about disciplining oneself were kept in one basket. Those relating to Sutras were kept in another basket and those which were very complex were kept in a separate basket. Finally, there were three baskets of different teachings which later came to be known as Tripitaka (the three baskets of teachings). These three teachings are known as the Buddhist holy books.
