There has been a lot of hype about the future availability of Freon for your residential air conditioners. The Freon in most residential air conditioners is called Freon-22. This type of Freon is less damaging to the ozone than the old Freon-12 that was used in the car air conditioners. The Freon-22 is actually scheduled to be taken off the market but not for a long time. As of now the manufacturers of air conditioning equipment will no longer be able to produce equipment using Freon-22 after the year 2010. But the phase out of the production of Freon-22 is not scheduled until the year 2020. There are several experimental refrigerants on the market today that are trying to take the place of Freon-22, but none have been accepted as the industry standard. I would be very hesitant to recommend a system using one of these new refrigerants to one of my customers because of the possible consequences.
