Are 4 cylinder 1.6 litre engines a good idea?
“Is it a good idea to effectively limit the amount of power in the worlds premier motosport.” No, it isn’t, but bringing in the new engine configuration won’t make a difference to that as it happens already. The proposed new turbo engines are an excellent idea, and they will actually have the same amount of power overall as the current engines, the power will simply be delivered in a different way, with less available at lower revs and more available in the mid to high range. It will make the driver work harder, which is a good thing for the best drivers and not such a good thing for the worst drivers. Way back in 1986, straight 4, 1.5 litre turbos could be tuned to put out DOUBLE what the current V8s produce, so the problem doesn’t lie with the configuration in itself. If you want faster cars, then you should petition the FIA to allow the teams to have an unilmited number of engines per year and unlimited development instead of a design freeze. Both the current V8s and the future stra
