Are Australian electoral laws unconstitutional?

The political lobby group GetUp! will head to the High Court today in an attempt to overturn federal laws concerning the close of the electoral roll. In 2006, the Howard government introduced amendments to the Electoral Act which meant that the roll closed at 8pm on the day the writs were issued. Today, GetUp! will argue that those changes were unconstitutional because they deprive some Australians of the right to vote.
