Are avocados and grapes deadly to dogs?

I read somewhere that avocados and grapes are deadly to dogs. My yorkie eats the avocados that fall from the tree in my yard all the time, and I know my family members have fed her grapes before, as well. She’s never had a problem, but are they really that dangerous to dogs? Grapes are known to cause renal failure in dogs. The biological mechanism is unknown though, according the the Merk Vet Manual. I have also had vets confirm this fact. As for avocado, the are dangerous for birds, but shouldn’t cause harm to your dog. In fact, avocado is a common ingredient some top shelf dog foods, such as Avoderm. (My dog loves Avoderm!) I would try to keep your dog from eating the pit and the skin though. Many poisonous fruits are poisonous due to their seeds, bark, leaves, etc (like apples). You judge for yourself: Here is the link for the the Merk Veterinary Desk Reference: http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/211102.htm&word=avocado Here is the Avoderm website: http://www.b
