Are call centres the way forward for impoverished areas?
I suppose any job’s better than no job at all. Although in my experience virtually all call centres now are located in other countries where the minimum wage is less. The answer to impoverished areas is twofold, investment, and training. Invest in poorer areas providing things like green spaces, playgroups for young children, youth clubs for young teens, etc. post 16 education also needs much more diversity for people who are less academically orientated and are much stronger with practical things like carpentry or engineering. Also I’d like to see councils taking a bit more initiative getting a wider range of bussinesses on the high street: I live in a medium sized town in Suffolk and there’s nowhere in town to by a DVD, game, or CD. However there is now a tesco situated 100 metres away from an Aldi, across the road from that is the local co-op, then 2 minutes up the road from that there’s going to be an Iceland.
