Are cell phones safe while driving?
On One Hand: Cell Phones DistractAccording to a study from the Harvard Center of Risk Analysis, cell phone use while driving contributes to approximately 6 percent of car crashes. Many states are making cell phone use in the car illegal and claim that it is just as risky as driving under the influence of alcohol. Using a cell phone takes away the cognitive skills needed to focus on driving, ultimately causing distraction and taking a driver’s mind off the road.On the Other: Use Hands-Free DevicesWhile some claim that the use of hands-free cell phones are still a risk, they are much safer than using a regular mobile phone. These units keep drivers’ hands on the wheel and eyes on the road and are more akin to conversing with a passenger than having a phone conversation. Though several states want to ban the usage of hand-held communication devices, hands-free products are readily available.Bottom LineTalking and texting on a cell phone while driving is a proven distraction for drivers.
