In my experience I have never had a problem with my Chihuahuas getting along with children within my home. What needs to be taken into consideration, however, is how the child should be taught to treat the dog. Parents must teach their children the proper way to handle a puppy so that he or she feels secure in their (two) arms. Chihuahuas do not like to be carried with one hand and dangled from a child’s arm, yanked by the tail, or picked up the the ears or scruff of the neck. Treating any animal in this way can cause harm to the dog and can teach the puppy to defend itself from the person treating them in that way by scratching, biting, urinating or any number of other defense mechanisms. Teach your child also to play with young puppies on the floor to reduce the risk of them falling from furniture. It does not take a very long fall to snap a small puppy’s leg in two.
