As they are heavily processed, bottled, and not fresh fruits or vegetables, they do not contain as much of the nutrients as when you make fresh food at home for baby.

Commercial baby food is just as nutritious as homemade. Sometimes moreso because it is packed the day it is picked while the stuff at the grocery store may be weeks old. In addition, Gerber only buys organic now and have strict requirements for the farms they contract with. I don’t know anything about Heinz though. US Govt. requires all baby food manufacturers to test baby foods for contaminants such as nitrates, which you, as a consumer, would be unable to do unless you grew your own garden. Homemade food is CHEAPER! That’s the best thing that can be said for it. It is no safer that commercial food as many cases of e.coli and other contaminants generally don’t get to the national news unless it is packaged (such as lettuce fixings). Your kid is no less sick however. Pick whichever method you prefer. Stuff like bananas are certainly easy to make and nutritious. You just peel and mash. Serve.
