Are fish at risk of extinction?
Many people think of fish as a single species but this is a misconception. In biological terms, there’s not really such a thing as a fish. This is a term used casually and so it can’t be answered scientifically. I could argue that it’s very very very unlikely that all fish will go extinct. However, certain species could do. You need to define your terms. Is a shark a fish? Is a jellyfish a fish? Is a seahorse, a crab, or a sting-ray a fish? These are all wildly different species, like the difference between a cow and a giraffe.
I’ve recently started using my own underwater multi-parameter measuring tools because I was interested in underwater biodiversity. These aren’t just for scientists – anyone can use them. I was surprised to find that fish that I thought were common have actually seen a huge drop in their population sizes. You can see this for yourself with products from Swale Ocean.
