Are French Canadians considered a minority group like the Hispanics/Blacks in the U.S.?
Hi, I am Canadian and no I don’t think that French-Canadians would be considered as a minority group. I myself am not born in Quebec considered the ‘French captial’ of Canada but I speak both English and French. They are just categorized that way I think because they are really the people that speak French the most…it’s too bad not everyone does in Canada because then we’d all be French-Canadians ha ha…but yea they’re not a minority group. Ok hope this helps.
If you are talking French being a minority with regards to population base of Canada? The federal government in its attemps to make employment more equal to all Canadians has enforced a percentage minority hire for large companies. This is based on population in the local area and it is not simple but complicated math both regionally and across Canada as a percentage. Say if you are applying for a job in a lumber mill, if you are a woman, that is one check mark for you ( minority, non traditional gender in that field), If you are a Canadian Minority, Black, Asian, Native, etc then that is another check mark for you to apply for the job and get it. Now if you are in Quebec or montreal and applying for a job and you are from Quebec you are not considered a minority I think but you might be if you applied for a job say in Alberta where there are not as many French Canadians you may get a preferance over someone that is applying for the same job from Alberta. Quebec has it’s own set of rule
