Are harp seals usually white in color?

As far as I know, they’re the only ones born snow white. They are born this colour for camouflage, to keep them safe from predators until they’re old enough to swim. Once they grow a little, the white fur falls out, and they all turn dark grey. Consider how impractical it would be for an adult seal to have to swim with a long, thick coat of fur – it would end up waterlogged & drown! This is why the seal clubbers only kill the babies – they are the only ones that are white, and only for the first few weeks of their lives.
