For other people asking – a civil union is not just for gay people in NZ – it is also for straight people who do not want to ‘marry’ but want a formal recognition of their committment. Unfortunately I can’t help with your question OP other than to say in most countries a civil union (or equivalent) is usually only recognised for immigration purposes if that country also recognises civil unions.
