Are hip-hop lyrics poetry?
By the strictest definition, most of it is, as even the most lewd and idiotic lyrics contain literary devices, meter, and rhythm (not necessary for poetry, but it helps in defining most poetry). There are alot of Hip-hop and rap lyrics that I would personally call poetic, due to the fact that they have evocative meanings, clever rhyme schemes, and use of metaphors, etc. Problem is, you won’t hear these songs on the radio as the mainstream hiphop/rap community is dominated by garbage.
