Hybrids may be a good start — they are, after all, very green, but in all honesty a well designed diesel (like the VW) gets as good or better fuel mileage, better performance and costs thousands of dollars less. We may be ready for hybrids but the hybrids we have today simply aren’t ready for us. Heavy, expensive and plagued with maintenance issues hybrids. I actually owned a Datsun 110 coupe in the ’70’s that got an honest 41 mpg. The feds have strangled today’s cars with so much safety and emissions equipment that no amount of technology is going to squeeze much more power out of an internal combustion engine — so, it’s time to branch out for other fuel sources like bio-diesel, natural gas, alcohol and my personal favorite, hydrogen. My prediction for the very near future? – the plug-in electric car equipped with a natural gas back-up engine/generator will make a roaring come-back within the next five years as the commuter vehicle of choice in urban areas.
