EIA's estimates of alternative fuel vehicles in use (Tables 1-9 of EIA's AFV tables) reflect only hybrid vehicles that run on a combination of electricity and one of the designated alternative fuels (e.g., a propane hybrid). They do not include hybrid electric vehicles that run on a combination of electricity and gasoline or diesel fuel because the Department of Energy has ruled that those do not qualify as "alternative fuel vehicles." However, due to the interest of our data users, EIA does include gasoline and diesel hybrids in the "vehicles made available" data that appear in Tables 14-20.  more
