Are Ice Arenas Driving Figure Skaters Away? Thursday August 27, 2009 There is no doubt that ice time is expensive. With today’s economy, it is becoming more and more difficult to be a figure skater. Freestyle figure skating sessions vary from $5 to $20 per session. Most competitive figure skaters must skate three to five sessions a day, so the cost of just being on the ice can become a huge burden. Some ice arenas offer discounts when skaters contract ice and pre-pay for sessions in bulk. Lesson costs are on top of ice time costs. Somehow, ice skating families come up with the money, but eventually, many skaters just can’t handle the cost of figure skating.
