Actually both can be used psychologically. Obsession is when a particular thought, idea or object is constantly and incessantly in one’s mind. The constancy of these thoughts usually results in a compulsion of that person to do something about the obsession. Addiction, which is normally used as dependency, can also be a compulsion to do something continuously and dependently regardless of how harmful it can be physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, etc….

Obsession is when the mind has you doing things over and over. Addiction is when you are in the habit of having something such as caffine and the body begins to depend on it.

To me, obsession comes from something you have an emotional attachment to, and addiction comes from something you have a physical attachment to. At least, that’s the way I’ve always thought of it.
