Are rhinos on Sumatra and Borneo the same species?
They are currently regarded as two different sub-species belonging to one species, based on skull shape, DNA and the fact that the Bornean rhinoceros is somewhat smaller. Using scientific names, the Sumatran rhinoceros is Dicerorhinus sumatrensis sumatrensis while the Bornean rhinoceros is Dicerorhinus sumatrensis harrissoni. Sabah, Borneo and Malaysia Sabah is one of thirteen States in the federation of Malaysia, and is situated on the northern 10% of the equatorial island of Borneo. Sarawak is also a Bornean State within Malaysia, while the rest of Malaysia, known as Peninsular Malaysia, is at the South-eastern tip of mainland Asia.
