Although the vast amount of Irish people would not admit to it, Yes, particularly among the working classes, there is some racism and great resentment towards people from West Africa. During the boom years, we had thousands of Eastern Europeans entering Ireland, seeking and obtaining work. They integrated very well with the native population and were welcomed. At the same time large numbers of West Africans also arrived as asylum seekers. These people were not allowed to work and in many cases, didn’t want to work. The cash rich Government gave them free housing, free medical, free clothing, free secondary and university education and weekly cash allowances. Generally, the people ignored their existence and they continued to arrive in droves. Now that the Celtic Tiger has long gone, and we were all faced with higher taxes, increased pension contributions, and a deterioration in the education an health services.
