Are shih tzus good with children?

They loves children and gets along with other animals. However, although the Shih Tzu is a sturdy dog, his small size puts him at a disadvantage. Adults should always supervise interactions between children and dogs, and this is especially important for the Shih Tzu, to prevent him from accidentally getting hurt during rough play.

Just like Chyna said, Shih Tzus get along with children because this breed is very gentle as long as it is treated carefully. Their size and temperament make them an ideal house pet even in urban areas. Since they love to play outdoors, the children can have lots of fun with Shih Tzus but, keep in mind that if your dog has very long hair, then it’s also good to teach the children to help with brushing it. If you decide to keep it short, it will be easier to groom it.

Shi Tzus generally speaking are a friendly breed and good for families, however all dogs are individuals. If a dog is raised among children from a young age they will usually be just fine with them, unless some extreme circumstance happens and they are hurt by a child, in which case they can develop a fear of them. Any dog should be tested with children before being brought into the home if you don’t know their background, just to be sure. No matter what, always remember to supervise children and dogs together. Small dogs like Shi Tzus may accidentally be hurt by a child trying to play, or may snap if their ears, tail, or fur gets pulled on. Teach your children how to understand a dog’s body language and play nicely, and to respect when a dog wants to be left alone.
