Are Students exempt from Income Tax & National insurance if they work?
Can I correct some misconceptions on here? Students are NOT exempt from tax in the UK. But all UK citizens are entitled to a tax-free personal allowance of £6475. The tax year goes from 6th April to 5th April, so if you start work soon, you will have a backlog of unused allowance. Both tax and NI are based on amount of earnings, not hours worked. But whereas tax is calculated on a cumulative basis for the year, NI is on each payday in isolation. You can earn £110 a week before NI is deducted. Form P38S is relevant for students working in vacations only, and then only if earnings will be below £6475 a year. Not for someone like yourself who is planning to work throughout the year, albeit part-time, even though you may earn less than the limit.
