Are tangerines poisonous to dogs or cats, for that matter?
―Pam C. Wow, Pam. Interesting question. Tangerines are safe for dogs and cats, although we wouldn’t imagine too many cats eating them! Can you name some healthy, safe, well-tolerated veggies that I can feed to my Chihuahuas? ―JoAnne N. Well, JoAnne, my dogs eat all kinds of vegetables! They especially like carrots. But they will eat broccoli, cauliflower and bell peppers. The only vegetables we recommend you avoid are onions, scallions and garlic. We have three large dogs that live in the house, but love to play in our fenced-in yard. They trample on the grass and make it muddy. Last year I added a mini-fence down the middle of the backyard. I would treat half the lawn with chemicals (fertilizer, grub control, etc.) and keep the dogs on the other side for a few weeks. Then I would switch. My goal was to minimize their contact with chemicals. That worked until last fall when our German shepherd puppy decided she wanted the whole yard all the time. What do I do now? Oranges, tangerines, and clementines are not toxic to dogs. However, they are high in sugars and can potentially cause GI upset if your pet eats too many of them. The citric acid in these fruits is not a concern to dogs. It can be a problem in some cats.
I recommend that you only give 1 or 2 segments per day. Any more than that can lead to obesity or other issues. These along with any other treats should not make up more than 10% of your pet’s daily calories. If you feed treats their daily food intake should be decreased by 10% to prevent obesity.
Grapes and raisins can be toxic to pets and I recommend that you do not feed them to your pet at any time.
