Are the counseling sessions confidential?
All counseling sessions with the social worker are confidential and no one knows the student’s business unless they choose to tell others what they talked about. However, the one exception to that confidentiality is that social workers, just like teachers, nurses and others are mandated reporters of child abuse and/or neglect. If there is someting discussed in the counseling sessions that indicates that the student is in danger of abuse or neglect, then it must by law be reported to the proper authorities so that the student can be protected from further harm.
